Tourism Ireland Says Its Data Shapes 1 in 5 AI Answers About Ireland
Tourism Ireland says its content shapes nearly one in five AI answers about Ireland, as traveler reliance on AI for inspiration doubled in a year.

- Tourism Ireland CEO Alice Mansergh said its content informs close to 1 in 5 AI-generated answers about Ireland.
- The share of travelers naming AI as their primary travel inspiration source doubled in the past year, per Tourism Ireland research.
- The figure was disclosed Thursday at Skift's Transatlantic Summit in Dublin.
- Mansergh advised building "a bit of a surround sound" across Reddit, YouTube, and Tripadvisor.
- Skift has contacted Tourism Ireland for details on the metric's methodology.
Tourism Ireland says content it supplies now informs close to one in five AI-generated answers about Ireland — a rare published figure in a market where most destinations are still auditing what chatbots say about them.
CEO Alice Mansergh disclosed the number Thursday at Skift's Transatlantic Summit in Dublin. It matters because almost no destination marketing organization (DMO, the body that promotes a place to travelers) has put a public measure on its influence over generative AI outputs from tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
The stakes are rising fast. Tourism Ireland's own research found the share of travelers naming AI as their primary source of travel inspiration doubled in the past year. For sellers of travel, that shift moves the battleground for visibility from search rankings to machine-readable content.
The takeaway: AI is becoming a distribution channel, and Tourism Ireland is one of the first DMOs to say out loud how much of it it controls.
What is the agency actually doing?
Mansergh said Tourism Ireland responded by optimizing all of its digital content so generative AI can read and cite it, then tracking results. The mechanism is straightforward: models reward content they can parse, and they reward repetition across sources.
Left alone, she said, AI repeats the same familiar recommendations. So the agency is feeding it smaller regional experiences — sheepdog demonstrations in Sligo, traditional boat building on the Aran Islands — to spread visitors and spending around the island rather than concentrating them in a handful of famous spots.
The takeaway: this is dispersion strategy, aimed at moving revenue geographically, not just boosting arrivals.
Why does "surround sound" matter?
Because the models don't only read DMO websites. They also pull from Reddit, YouTube, and Tripadvisor. Mansergh's advice to destinations: choose what you want to be famous for, then build what she called "a bit of a surround sound" — other voices repeating the same message so the model corroborates it.
That changes the work of a DMO. It's no longer enough to publish good content; an agency needs third-party mentions that machines will treat as confirmation.
She also warned against overusing the technology, citing consumer distaste for what she called "AI slop" — low-quality, machine-generated filler that turns travelers off.
The takeaway: corroboration across user-generated platforms, not owned content alone, is what moves AI answers.
How solid is the number?
Treat the one-in-five figure with care. It's a self-reported metric from the agency, and Skift has contacted Tourism Ireland for details on its methodology. Until that's disclosed, the number sits closer to a pitch than a measured, independently verifiable result — useful as a benchmark, but not yet audited.
What's not in doubt is the direction: AI queries about destinations are growing, and DMOs that make their content machine-readable early will hold a structural advantage in how their market appears in generated answers.
