Southwest Replaces A-List With Three Tiers Starting January 2027

Southwest will replace A-List tiers with silver, gold and platinum status on January 1, 2027, and open its first Chase-backed lounges as it courts premium travelers.

Itinerary

  1. Southwest replaces A-List and A-List Preferred with silver, gold and platinum tiers on January 1, 2027.
  2. Tier thresholds are 35,000, 65,000 and 140,000 qualifying points, or 25, 50 and 100 qualifying flights.
  3. Companion passes: up to three between gold and platinum, unlimited at platinum.
  4. First Southwest Icon Lounges open in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville, paired with a new Chase premium card in 2027.
  5. Partner earning with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways starts spring 2027.

Southwest Airlines will replace its two A-List status tiers with a three-tier structure — silver, gold and platinum — effective January 1, 2027, in the most consequential rewrite of Rapid Rewards in the program's history.

The move completes Southwest's transformation into a carrier that looks much like the rivals it spent decades differentiating itself from. The airline has already shed open boarding and free checked bags for all passengers. Lounges, premium credit cards and tiered status were the remaining markers of the legacy model it avoided.

For travel sellers, the shift matters beyond branding. Loyalty structure drives corporate bookings, card spend and share of wallet.

What does the new tier structure look like?

Thresholds are set at 35,000, 65,000 and 140,000 tier qualifying points, or 25, 50 and 100 qualifying flights for silver, gold and platinum respectively. Current A-List members convert to silver; A-List Preferred members receive gold starting next year.

Benefits now mirror those at Delta, United and American:

  • Free seat selection and access to extra-legroom seats
  • Group boarding priority
  • Free checked bags
  • Earning bonuses of 40% to 120% depending on tier

Southwest said the three tiers give customers more opportunities to receive benefits as they engage with the program — a claim sellers should weigh against actual qualification rates once data emerges.

The carrier is also adding Milestone Rewards, benefits unlocked between status tiers. Before a customer reaches silver status, they will begin earning incremental perks under the mechanism. Credit cardholders earn one tier qualifying point per dollar spent, tying card volume directly to status qualification.

How do companion passes change?

Companion passes become a status currency rather than a separate threshold. Members between gold and platinum can earn up to three companion passes. Platinum members get unlimited companion passes — a meaningful escalation for high-frequency flyers.

From spring 2027, members can earn and redeem points with partners including Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways, opening Southwest's closed loyalty economy to international redemptions for the first time.

Where do the lounges open?

The loyalty overhaul lands alongside the Southwest Icon Lounge network, designed in partnership with Chase and accessed through a new premium Chase credit card launching in 2027. First locations are planned for Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville — all major Southwest operation bases, none a legacy-carrier fortress hub.

Starlink Wi-Fi will cover the full fleet by fall 2027, closing another gap with competitors' connectivity offerings.

Why is Southwest moving upmarket?

Profitability drives the strategy. Southwest has shed open boarding and free checked bags for all in its push for margin, and it is among the few U.S. carriers on track to post a profit this year despite rising fuel costs.

The premium push now extends from cabin product to distribution-relevant levers: co-brand card economics with Chase, lounge access as a retention tool, and a three-tier structure designed to concentrate spend among the most valuable members.

Sellers of travel should watch conversion rates as A-List members map to silver in 2026, and whether the Chase premium card's lounge access materially shifts bookings toward Southwest channels.

The full competitive test arrives in 2027, when the new tiers, the card, the lounges and the airline partners go live together.
