MSC Bellissima Exits Shanghai as Foreign Cruise Presence in Asia Thins
MSC Bellissima ended MSC's 2026 China season in Shanghai; only two international-brand ships will sail year-round in Asia in 2027 as Costa Serena exits the region this month.

Itinerary
- MSC Bellissima (4,500 passengers) ended MSC's 2026 China season in early October, departing Shanghai on a repositioning voyage.
- Only two international-brand ships — MSC Bellissima and Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas — will sail year-round in Asia in 2027 after Costa Serena departs this month.
- Three ships left the Chinese market in 2026: Viking Yidun, Blue Dream Star and Piano Land.
- MSC Bellissima's winter deployment runs from Tokyo, Keelung and Naha through early 2027, with a return to Shanghai in mid-January.
- 2026 marked 20 years of MSC Cruises operations in China, with sailings reportedly close to selling out.
MSC Bellissima, a 4,500-passenger ship, ended MSC Cruises' 2026 China season in early October with a repositioning sailing out of Shanghai — leaving just two international-brand vessels sailing year-round in Asia heading into 2027.
The exit matters for sellers of travel in the region. When Costa Serena leaves the region later this month, MSC Bellissima and Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas become the only internationally branded ships deployed full-time in Asia next year. International cruise inventory in the world's largest source market pool is contracting sharply.
Where is the Bellissima going next?
The 2019-built vessel shifts to Japan and Taiwan for the winter season. Departures are scheduled from Tokyo, Keelung and Naha, running through early 2027, with four- to six-night itineraries aimed at national markets in the region. Ports include Miyakojima, Ishigaki and Seogwipo. The ship returns to Shanghai in mid-January.
The redeployment follows a split 2026 season in China. MSC opened with a spring program from the Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, repositioned to Southeast Asia mid-year, then returned to Mainland China in August. Through October, the Bellissima ran four- to seven-night cruises to Japan and South Korea, calling at Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Busan and Jeju.
The season marked 20 years of MSC Cruises operations in China, and sailings and stateroom categories were reportedly close to selling out — a claim from the operator, not independently audited capacity data.
What does the shrinking foreign fleet mean for distribution?
The numbers frame the shift:
- Two international-brand ships year-round in Asia in 2027: MSC Bellissima and Spectrum of the Seas (2019-built, sailing from homeports in China, Hong Kong and Japan).
- Three ships exited the Chinese market this year: Viking Yidun, Blue Dream Star and Piano Land.
- Costa Serena leaves the region this month, removing Costa's year-round presence.
Domestic brands are filling the gap. StarDream Cruises, Adora Cruises and Tianjin Oriental International Cruise Line all operate year-round in the region, meaning distribution partners working China-departed inventory will increasingly deal with homegrown operators rather than European or American cruise lines.
For agents and OTAs, the practical consequence is channel concentration: fewer internationally branded products to sell means MSC and Royal Caribbean capacity from Shanghai, Tokyo, Keelung, Hong Kong and Naha will carry outsized weight in 2027 Asia cruise programs, while domestic-brand inventory — often sold through different contracting and commission structures — takes a larger share of the market.
MSC's mid-January return to Shanghai signals the line has not abandoned the market. But with three departures this year and Costa exiting, the foreign year-round footprint in Asia is now at its thinnest in years, and 2027 bookings will concentrate on a handful of ships.
